"Reflecting on Old SMLNostalgia or Necessity?"

It’s not an uncommon thing to miss the ‘good old days’ of SML. Whether it’s something we were working on or just a time when things were a bit simpler and easier, often our minds go back to those memories in some form. The question is, is that nostalgia or a necessity?

  • We often reminisce in order to lift our spirits in the present. It’s a way to gain a level of comfort and familiarity that may be missing in the here and now. But we must also consider whether those memories tell us something about our current situation that we should pay attention to. Is there something we were doing then that is worth considering now?
  • Rather than letting ourselves get too caught up in nostalgia, it’s important to reflect on the way we used to do things. What worked? What didn’t? By taking a good look at our past, we may be able to gain some much-needed insight into how to move forward in the best, most informed way. With this in mind, we can then decide whether our nostalgia is a passing fancy or a necessity.

"The Beginnings of Old SMLA Retrospective"

The Southern Methodist Libraries Archives (SMLA) was founded in 1925 by a group of passionate librarians and archives enthusiasts who had a dream to create an institution that could document and preserve the areas rich cultural history. The first collection of the SMLA included newspaper clippings, documents, and photographs that charted the history of SMU through the years. In its formative days, the motivations were to support research, connect people with the past, and provide people access to the history of the area.

In the years since its founding, the SMLA has continued to serve those same core goals but has grown by leaps and bounds. Various collections have been added, including oral histories, historic photographs, artifacts, and so much more. Separate divisions worked together to include resources from neighborhoods, businesses, and clubs that have been influential within the area.

Documents, photos, and artifacts collected by the SMU Libraries Archives are still accessible by the public to this day. They offer a unique window into history and provide vital context for our past that we cannot get anywhere else. As the SMLA retrospective continues to grow, it will offer more and more insight into the complex history of the SMU area and serve as a permanent reminder of where we came from.
